Eco-Refurbishment

25 October 2012

11:45 AM - 1:45 PM

Venue:

Truro College, College Road, Truro TR1 3XX

Description:

This session will look at the practicalities of refurbishing Georgian, Victorian and 1930's house types using sustainable principles.

Solutions such as internal and external wall insulation, floor insulation, natural materials and renewable energy technologies will be covered, as well as some of the thorny issues of eco-refurbishment in conservation areas.

The seminar will also consider an extreme eco-refurbishment of a 1930's house in Bristol, demonstrating that a 70% reduction in energy consumption is possible.

Measures taken to achieve the energy consumption reduction included external wall insulation, ground floor insulation and double layer of roof insulation, new high performance windows, attention to details and modifications in occupant usage.

Additionally, the project sought to reduce water consumption and waste and used natural, low-impact materials throughout the house including reclaimed timber flooring. Post-occupancy data will illustrate how the measures taken have actually affected the impact of the house, including thermal imaging, air tightness test results, EPC and NHER rating and temperature monitoring over a 12-month period.
