26 September 2012

9:30 AM - 4:30 PM

Armada House, Telephone Avenue, Bristol BS1 4BQ

This one-day course is an introduction to Passivhaus. It will help you avoid common mistakes, making the journey smoother and your project cheaper and easier to build. The day will consist of:

1.  Why Passivhaus?

  • What the standard is;
  • Differences between PH & UK conventions;
  • Examples of UK builds and lessons learnt.

2.  How Passivhaus affects pre-planning design

  • How shape affects the heat loss;
  • Significance of solar access in site planning; how to achieve PH without optimum orientation/access;
  • Use of PHPP to aid design choices.

3.  How Passivhaus affects detailed design

  • Construction choices and component specification;
  • Air tightness detailing and sequencing;
  • Ventilation systems.

4.  Certification and process

  • Accreditation process – When to bring in a Certified Designer and do you need one?
  • Discuss how much extra time you will need to allow on a scheme and what a Passivhaus designer can offer.

Speaker: Peter Warm is a Chartered Energy Conservation Engineer with a strong interest in understanding how the building fabric works. His experience is varied between research and practical on site work. Currently, Peter is a partner in Warm: Low Energy Building Practice with his daughter Sally Godber. Peter is accredited by the Passivhaus Institut in Darmstadt to provide certification and consultancy for Passivhaus schemes. Currently, he is providing consultation on new build schemes including St Ive Rural Passivhaus and several Passivhaus retrofit projects.
