The much anticipated 2013 changes to the Building Regulations will be a balancing act between deregulation and new regulations. What with the introduction of the new merged Super K Approved Document, the ever-uplifting Part L and some key changes to the building control system, this short regulatory round up is just what you need to keep up to speed.

Letter contracts for small projects

On small projects, many architects choose to make the contract with their client by means of a letter rather than a standard form of appointment. But are there risks for the architect (or the client) in doing so? How should the letter be worded and what should it contain? Should terms of payment and copyright be mentioned? What provisions should be included? What liabilities defined or limited? This seminar will give clear guidance and explain, via case studies and examples, the best way to handle letter of appointment for small projects, highlighting the ‘do’s’, as well as the ‘don’ts’.

The changing role of the project architect

During this seminar, we will look at the changing role of the project architect due to the impact of legislative changes and new technology, as well as the rise of project management. The session will cover the key aspects of running a project including:
• Appointments, scope of service, forms of procurement and their impact on the project architect
• Managing the fee and keeping profitable
• The team - responsibilities, communications, co-ordination and project managers
• Tendering procedures; traditional, two stage tendering, cost planning
• New technologies - e-tendering, collaborative working, project extranets and BIM, how to integrate them and how they can broaden a practice portfolio
• Aspects of administering the contract
• Structuring site inspections and dealing with the contractor.
Chris will include scenario-based exercises drawn from project experience.
Target audience: job running architects; also recently qualified architects looking to build their expertise.
