The architects were asked to reconfigure and refurbish what had been an Abbey Church and latterly a school, creating a retreat centre and adding new accessible accommodation for both monks and their guests. They responded with a new wing which allows the monks’ residential areas to be segregated from the numerous short-stay visitors. This is a modest, even humble piece of work, but the quality of the architecture and consistency of detailing shine through. The new library is a place where you want to sit and read books forever.
