The Marlowe Theatre

The Marlowe Theatre

Scheme name: The Marlowe Theatre
Practice: Keith Williams Architects
Client: Canterbury City Council
Photographer: Hélène Binet

The trick was to fit the inevitable mass of a theatre into the maze of Grade I listed buildings that makes up Canterbury’s UNESCO World Heritage Site. The architects have achieved the near impossible with a white stone colonnade that wraps the foyer spaces and unified the composition. A sloping granite forecourt leads into the foyer and the 1,194 seat main auditorium.

The flytower, second only in height to Cathedral tower, is clad in stainless steel mesh and lights up at night. Truly a landmark building.
