Venue:
Stowe House, Buckingham
Description:
Phase 2 of the Stowe House Restoration Plan completed the external repairs to the Central Mansion, reinstating the historic roofs and repairing and conserving the stonework and render of the elevations. In addition, the project restored the magnificent elliptical Marble Saloon, featuring a fine plaster domed ceiling. Considerable craft skills have been used to produce an extremely high quality restoration of both interior and exterior architectural features of historic significance.
Much of the stonework of the South Front was found to be in very poor condition and was literally disintegrating. This was certainly the case at high level, however the decay affected all areas and the south steps were also in need of particular attention and were renewed entirely.
The flank walls, taking in the transition from stonework to render, were also completed with attention paid to the fine detail of the render mouldings making up the cornice at high level.
During the course of Phase II, Stowe House Preservation Trust had the opportunity to extend the contract to include the restoration of the interior of the Marble Saloon lying immediately underneath the domed section of the roof. This work was successfully completed and included the conservation and repair of the fine plaster coffered ceiling together with its Roman triumphal frieze, the cleaning and repolishing of the scagliola columns, new lighting, a complete redecoration and, of course, the restoration of the Marble floor.
