This course for architects and designers will include case studies and practical exercises and will cover the following:

An introduction to bat ecology:

  • the importance of bats
  • survival strategies and interesting facts
  • bat year: breeding to hibernation

Legislation, surveying and licensing:

  • why are bats protected?
  • the law
  • when to survey: timing
  • survey triggers for bats
  • how are surveys conducted?
  • EPS licences and mitigation

Mitigation and enhancement solutions:

  • roosting requirements: size, access, temperature, materials, location
  • commercial and bespoke solutions

Design and technical specification:

  • bricks
  • insulation
  • new build
  • retrofit
