This Seminar will explain the role of expert witnesses in disputes including:

  • the legal obligations imposed on experts;
  • key issues when instructing experts (eg who is liable to pay the expert?)
  • the significance of an expert's actions before court proceedings commence (including an explanation of legal privilege, 'without prejudice' correspondence)
  • common problems and tips on report writing
  • typical court/adjudication procedure
  • an explanation of an experts role at hearings.

Left school at 16 and was an apprentice with (what is now) Spie Matthew Hall. Jon re-entered full time education and qualified as a solicitor in 1989 exclusively in the area of construction and engineering law for an international law firm and a specialist construction law firm. Jon obtained a Master's degree in Construction Law and Arbitration in 1996.

Jon is a fellow of the Chartered Institute of Arbitrators, an Associate of the Chartered Management Institute, an Academy of Experts and TeCSA Accredited and practicing Mediator, and is a RIBA, TeCSA AICA and CIC Adjudicator. In 1994 Jon lobbied the House of Lords on behalf of the construction industry during the passing of the Housing Grants and Regeneration Act 1996, eventually preparing the first draft of adjudication rules for two adjudicating nominating bodies. Jon is a visiting lecturer to Anglia Ruskin University as well as a speaker for the Institute of Structural Engineers, Chartered Institute of Building Service Engineers, Expert Witness Institute and RICS. He sits on the board of Constructing Excellence in Essex, CIBSE Eastern Home Counties Branch. Jon is a member of the RIBA Disciplinary Committee.
