RIBA Awards

RIBA Awards

RIBA Awards, which have been running since 1966, are the best established and most significant scheme for the recognition of excellence in architecture, and are respected worldwide. They honour those who commission and build, as well as those who design and each year the RIBA gives awards for between 60 and 70 buildings around the UK and Europe.

The RIBA Awards scheme is administered by the RIBA Awards Group in collaboration with the 14 RIBA Regions. All RIBA awards are national awards but, for organisational reasons, are submitted and judged on a regional basis. From these awards are selected shortlists which are visited and judged for further awards including the Stirling prize and a series of special awards. Every regional jury includes a local architect, a lay assessor and an architect chair appointed by the Awards Group.

The premier prize, the Stirling Prize, is judged by a panel of five, also including lay people. No judgements are made on the basis of photographs and descriptions alone. Every building is visited, which makes the Awards unique. Quality and not size is what matters.
