The Town and Country Design Awards are given in recognition of architectural excellence in the context of the region. They have proved very popular and 2007 has seen a record number of entries.

Over 70 entries were received by regional and national architects, with the jury visiting 14 fantastic projects across the length and breadth of the south west in all 8 counties and unitary authorities that make up this geographically contrasting region.

In an exciting innovation this year, the RIBA partnered with BBC Inside Out and Point West to give the public their say on the buildings which make the region proud. Public involvement enriches the strength of architecture in a social context, and we hope to extend this aspect of the awards next year.

Awards were presented at a very enjoyable evening ceremony at Paintworks cultural quarter in Bristol, attended by over 150 guests, representing the shortlisted projects and a host of sponsors and key individuals.

The Royal Institute of British Architects has a long tradition of leading public awareness of excellent design, and all the projects featured in the awards have been designed by RIBA architects. So whether you have an interest in architecture or are looking to employ an architect, I am sure you will find the projects featured a source of inspiration and information.

Entry forms for the next Town and Country Design Awards will be forwarded to RIBA members in spring 2008, with a closing date around the beginning of July and we look forward to building upon this year's success.
