Description:
Building Conservation – Philosophy, Process, Principle
An RIBA South West Master Class series seminar presented by Ian Constantinides
Ian will discuss conservation, repair and restoration and differentiate between the three. He will talk through the decision-making processes that lead to the adoption of radically different approaches and offer guidance on what works well and what does not.
Ian will argue that those who are successful in historic building repair have no special dogma, but understand the full potential of all the weaponry of the conservator's arsenal and indeed know which of them to apply on each occasion. Ian has a particular interest in aesthetics and will argue that all repairs must satisfy visually as well as perform functionally.
Reference will be made to costs, programme and pragmatism related to these activities together with the ethics of conservation. The seminar is particularly well illustrated with a wide cross section of examples of all aspects of masonry and brickwork, in most materials on buildings great and grand, ecclesiastical, and the humbler secular or vernacular.
