Malcolm Nicholls, The VAT Consultancy
Malcolm spent over 20 years with HM Customs and Excise, in 1990 he left for private practice and joined The VAT Consultancy in 2007. Over the past 17 years Malcolm has advised owner managed businesses on a wide range of issues such as construction industry VAT treatment and recovery, partial exemption for property developers and the VAT margin schemes. He has successfully represented clients at VAT Tribunals reducing penalties and challenged HMRC over VAT assessments leading to their being withdrawn and subsequently claiming costs. This afternoon, Malcolm will go through the subject of VAT for the small business and explain how clients on a tight budget can take advantage of VAT breaks for specific projects, such as listed buildings.
Alun Oliver, E3 Consulting
E3 Consulting are independent property taxation specialists providing capital allowances, land remediation, landfill tax and repairs & maintenance advice. They work in partnership with corporate and private landlords, property developers, contractors, investment institutions and alongside other professional services firms to identify and deliver property tax savings. Today, Alun explains how and where property taxation impacts on smaller projects. His session covers capital allowances including the extensive 2008 Budget Changes, Enhanced Capital Allowances for energy efficient assets and Flats over Shops. Additionally, he will discuss urban regeneration and brown field incentives such as Land Remediation Relief and Landfill Tax.
Tony Merrick, Westcountry Energy Action
Westcountry Energy Action is a charitable organisation, working in partnership with Local Authorities and Housing Associations to tackle fuel poverty within Devon and help to support sustainable energy initiatives and projects. One of the main projects is the Devon Energy Efficiency Advice Centre, which offers information about several grant schemes including CERT schemes and the BERR Low Carbon Buildings Programme, which will be presented on the day.
