Aston University Engineering Academy

The new academy is sponsored by Aston University, which brings its own engineering specialism to the school. It sits on a recently vacated inner city site, surrounded by roads, a canal, small business units and storage sheds. The building’s sleek horizontal metal cladding is in sympathy with this industrial environment and the nature of its specialism.

A simple plan organises the various spaces and their relationships. A large circulation space, which runs vertically through the building brings light into the deep plan. At upper ground floor level is a flexible hall and an open and spacious library with study areas.

The building is intended to resemble a place of work rather than a school and it does this successfully by using simple detailing and a sober pallet of materials.
