This new building sits comfortably on its site and the idiosyncratic south facades give the building an identity and speak of the engineering nature of the activity within.
The interior spaces are designed to enable the free exchange of ideas and new ways of learning. Teaching rooms and offices are located at the perimeter and on all levels a large central space extends horizontally and vertically between all floors. Discrete platforms, termed ‘planets’, allow for small group meeting and discussion. Two lecture theatres at ground floor can be joined to provide an auditorium with more than 500 seats.
The building successfully incorporates many sustainable technologies including occupant-controlled natural ventilation to offices, BMS-controlled natural ventilation to open-plan areas, a biomass boiler, solar thermal panels and a green roof.
