Thrift Radiates Happiness

13 - 17 March 2013

12:00 PM - 3:00 PM

Municipal Bank, Borad Street, Birmingham

Thrift Radiates Happiness is a contemporary arts exhibition to be held at the Municipal Bank in central Birmingham, UK. This project is a collaboration by Birmingham-based independent contemporary art gallery TROVE, the RIBA, the Birmingham Architectural Association (BAA) and global architects practice, Aedas who are keen to develop new partnerships between arts, culture and business while showcasing Birmingham's heritage and its vibrant architectural community.

The event is being held from 13 – 17 March 2013 with a varied programme of arts and architecture focussed events, taking place at different times throughout the day to allow a variety of audiences to experience the installations and the impressive Grade II listed space.

With the main foyer space hosting a sound and light installation and live music, the offices adjacent to the main space, and spaces upstairs and downstairs will feature pieces of work by Elly Clarke, Tom Crawford, Caitlin Griffiths, Ellie Harrison and Nicole Wilson, all of which are based on themes of commerce, current economical issues, up-cycling objects and investment. A key feature of the project is an auction to take place in the former bank’s safety deposit box room, where anyone can invest £2 to receive a random number for a safety deposit box containing a limited edition art print.

Alongside the art exhibition there will be an extensive educational programme provided by The BAA and the RIBA, including a public debate on the development of unused heritage, private view heritage tours and a student design competition.
