An update on legislation for Access and Health & Safety with a focus on best practice and the design and delivery of good practical solutions that are fit for purpose.
Access
An update on Inclusive and Accessible Design considerations including;
• changes to guidance, including BS8300:2009
• updates on the Disability Discrimination Acts,
• European standards
• access issues related to BS 9999
• inclusive design relating to sustainability and BREEAM
The updates will have a particular focus on design solutions for inclusion as well as the legislative considerations.
Health and Safety
This part of the seminar will give an update on CDM, a look at other design and construction site management issues and a detailed look at producing details that deliver a safe building design through construction and in maintenance.
The seminar presentation will cover
• an update on the impact of the CDM 2007 regulations
• application of the principles of prevention of accidents
• strategies for avoiding work at height during construction
• roof access strategies
• consideration of the Workplace (Welfare) Regulations 1992
The presentation will draw on case study and best practice to demonstrate the practical applications of CDM.
This seminar gives you three hours of general awareness and detailed knowledge CPD under the ‘Professional Context’ and ‘Health and Safety’ sections of the RIBA Core Curriculum and includes Design for Accessibility and various elements of Health and Safety

Neil Smith NRAC Consultant, Head of Inclusive Design, Buro Happold Ltd Neil’s experience and expertise lies in the application of strategic approaches to masterplanning and infrastructure delivering environments that are accessible and inclusive while addressing the country specific and statutory requirements of disability legislation. Co-author of the Metric Handbook (3rd edition) chapter on access and inclusion.
Brian Abbs, BSc(hons) Senior Safety Consultant, Buro Happold Ltd is an experienced CDM coordinator and safety consultant specialising in the application of safety in design.
