The thoughtful use of traditional materials and details, including a Green Oak structural frame, has enabled a large annex to form a delightful contemporary alteration and extension to this early 20th century house. The junction with the garage entrance, circulation space and existing house was resolved well. Internally the finishes are contemporary and the client’s sensitive furnishing has considerably enhanced the finished appearance.
The design used the garden setting and change in levels to balance the new works within the garden and has achieved a wonderful sense of external contact with quite intimate relationships despite large areas of glazing. The architect has achieved an ideal solution to the clients brief without compromising the existing building or its rural surroundings.
