Sheffield Design Awards 2009

Sheffield Civic Trust is launching the new Sheffield Design Awards in association with RIBA Yorkshire, the regional office of the Royal Institute of British Architects.

Criteria

The criteria for assessing submissions and making decisions on awards will follow the Design Review guidelines set out by the Commission for Architecture and the Built Environment (CABE) and the Royal Institute of Architects (RIBA). Outline examples of such criteria include the following:

  • Does the project make a positive contribution to the public realm?
  • How does it affect people's lives and does it participate in the life of this city?
  • Does the accommodation meet the requirements of its occupants?
  • Is the building's structure, whole-life cost, flexibility, adaptability and sustainability satisfactory?
  • Does the building please aesthetically? Is it beautiful? Will it be cherished by the community?
  • Does it use materials and energy wisely and responsibly?
  • Where appropriate, does the project take advantage of opportunities to innovate?

Awards

Sheffield Design Awards will cover projects within the City boundary and consist of three key award categories as follows:

The Best Building Award - the most successful contemporary design for a new building in the City, or excellence in the restoration, alteration, extension or improvement of an historic or existing building. This award will be made by the awards panel, consisting of leading designers, lay people and the Trust's Design Review Panel.

The Neighbourhood & Community Design Award - quality design in a small or community project within a 'neighbourhood' setting within the City. This award celebrates buildings and schemes that provide services and facilities, that benefit and are appreciated by, a specific community within the City. This award will made by the awards panel, consisting of leading designers, lay people and the Trust's design review panel.

The Citizen's Award – The best building or scheme in the City, voted for by the general public of Sheffield. This award will be made to the building or scheme which receives the most votes from SCT members and the general public combined (A separate entry form is available/attached).
