Carreg a Gwdyr ('Stone and Glass') is in the Wye Valley Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty. The design seeks to negotiate the transition into open countryside by contrasting solidity with transparency. The plan-form assumes an L-shape, which defines a living space from cellular study and utility area, and upstairs the master bedroom from three other bedrooms. A naturally ventilated and top-lit double-height glazed entrance area unites the two wings.
The detailing is fine, inventive and elegant and the building was conceived from the outset as a low-energy dwelling.
