RIBA London is committed to ensuring that members have a range of quality services available to them in order to add value to clients and the design industry as a whole. The region is part of an institute wide examination of future requirements in light of shifting economic circumstances and our CPD programme of education and other events in 2010 reflects feedback from members and has been maintained at a low cost.
In 2010, prices for all courses are fixed at a standard rate of £55 + VAT per delegate.
Details of all free CPD events are available from this page. The programme is ongoing with additions throughout the year. RIBA London offers free CPD on a case by case basis and relies on the support and partnership of others to make this possible.

Surface Design Show 2010 FREE CPD Portraits
RIBA London has teamed up with Montgomery events for this years Surface Design Show to produce two distinct FREE CPD seminars that look at landmark 2009 RIBA London Award winning schemes and the surface material consideration within them while showcasing innovation in core industry sectors:
-
Healthcare CPD Portrait- Future Intelligence in Material Application
Wednesday 17 February 2010, 13.00- 14.00 SDS
UCL Cancer Institute- with Neven Sidor at Grimshaw and Prof. Mark Enright at Imperial College
Grimshaw’s award winning UCL building is at the heart of one the largest bio-medical facilities in Europe and houses over 350 scientists. Internally the design combines both research areas and laboratories, while on the outside its façade responds to a grade II listed setting. The requirements of materials employed in healthcare, in particular in surface areas; need to be resilient in order to respond to everyday medical requirements. How might today’s research into material compounds embed future intelligence into the everyday design treatment of our next generation of healthcare buildings?
Find out from the UCL Cancer Institute project architects about the process behind the material choices of this innovative healthcare facility and hear what designers and architects’ might be specifying in the next twenty years and beyond.
-
Housing CPD Portrait- Sustainable Concretes and Surface Innovation
Thursday 18 February 2010 13.00- 14.00 SDS
The Tarling Estate- with Abigail Batchelor at S333 Architects and Elaine Toogood at the Concrete Centre.
S333’s eye catching residential scheme challenges the traditional concept of the terrace bringing affordable, family homes back into an inner city area. Its character is defined by a strong surface material presence where a dark chocolate polyester concrete gives a luxurious feel, achieved within a tight budget. Concrete lends itself readily to surface manipulation and robust structural requirements. Could its residential use be encouraged through innovation that embeds sustainable technologies, high performance ratings as well as striking design features?
Projects architects on the Tarling Estate detail the processes behind surface material consideration with a discussion about how future technologies in concrete are evolving and pushing environmental standards in the sector.
Both events are FREE and take place at:
Surface Design Show, the Business Design Centre- Islington, Upper Street LONDON
