Career Breaks

Return to Practice

In association with London Metropolitan University, the RIBA Equality Task Force and the RIBA CPD department developed a 'return to practice' course for practitioners returning after a career break. The development of the programme responds to the findings of the RIBA/University of the West of England research, on why women in particular leave architecture.

The five-day course was piloted in May 2008 and included practice visits, site tours, social events and seminars. The week focused around a live building project, against which procurement and design processes were illustrated.

"Besides being great cpd, I learned a lot from the other participants experiences. The course gave me a boost of confidence and fresh enthusiasm for the profession.

Staying in Touch Proposal

Supporting the 'Return to Practice' course and in association with the Library and Information Centre, this proposal aims to keep in touch with those on a career break to ease the returning process.

Members of AfC are looking at ways in which the RIBA can support people who wish to take a career break, to ensure that their talent is not lost from the architectural profession. It is proposed that the RIBA could keep in touch with these architects via updates from the information centre and provide web advice to architects intending to leave the profession temporarily.
