The RIBA's 2008 party conference season kicked off successfully in Bournemouth with the Liberal Democrats. Our first fringe event debated the role of the State in designing happiness. Enthusiastic contributions from shadow ministers for housing and for culture, Lembit Opik MP and Richard Younger-Ross MP ensued.

The RIBA and Campaign to Protect Rural England put the necessity and deliverability of the Government's Eco-towns in the spotlight with a debate entitled "Eco-towns, White elephant or Green Solution?". Speakers included Shadow Communities Minister Dan  Rogerson MP and Adam Sampson , Shelter's Chief Executive.

Shadow Home Office Minister Chris Huhne MP, Steven Hadrill (Director General ABI) and other panellists focussed on how the built environment profession can prepare extreme weather and the threat posed by terrorism.

The Bournemouth Conference also gave the RIBA Public Affairs team the ideal opportunity to engage with key Liberal Democrat figures and other stakeholders in one-to-one meeting and by having a presence at other fringe seminars and events.
