The Exchange, Penzance

The Exchange
The Exchange, PenzanceDesigned by MUMA (McInnes Usher McKnight Architects), The Exchange is a former telephone exchange that has been transformed into a striking art space.

In 2003 Newlyn Art Gallery approached the RIBA to assist them in the selection of an architect by competitive interview for the refurbishment of Newlyn Art Gallery, as well as the conversion of the ground floor of the Exchange building in Penzance, Cornwall.

From over 50 expressions of interest, 5 architects were invited to second stage interviews. MUMA (McInnes usher McKnight Architects) were announced as winners in September 2003.

The new art space at The Exchange has a striking undulating glass façade which runs the entire length of the building, formerly a telephone exchange. A dramatic, changing light display, designed be Penwith-based artist Peter Freeman illuminates the glass panels according to the exhibitions, and the time of day and year.
