City & Islington College were looking for an innovative design for a new modern learning environment to integrate with the existing College building in Angel, London.

van Heyningen & Haward’s design best responded to the brief and they were selected as the winner. The Sixth Form College, is a six-storey building that provides 8000m2 of specialist teaching facilities. It has a dynamic street presence with its glazed elevation that reveals the life of the College. The night-time identity of the building, which can be lit up like a shop window, has been carefully considered in order to generate interest in further education and to integrate the building into local community life. A number of sustainable principles have been applied through the building such as natural light and ventilation to help create a high quality teaching environment. Since its completion, the building has made significant improvements to the College’s rates of intake, retention and achievement.
