Brooks Road Estates, PlaistowDesigned by Bell Phillips Architects, Brooks Road Estates looked at the refurbishment of 250 low-rise dwellings and 24 flats on a post-war housing estate.
This competition looked at the refurbishment of low-rise housing at the Brooks Road Estate in Plaistow, London. Following an international response Bell Phillips Architects was selected as the overall winner.
The practice refurbished 250 low-rise dwellings and 24 flats in a single linear building on a post-war housing estate. The architect worked alongside the local authority in close consultation with residents to develop a range of measures that improved the appearance of the estate, upgraded existing building fabric and revitalised the public realm.
The new designs focused on the redesign of the buildings frontage, which previously suffered from a clear distinction between public and private space.
The landscaping has provided residents with an increased sense of privacy and attractive outdoor spaces. The entrances have been re-clad in perforated aluminium, with new canopies and an attractive Victorian-style ceramic glazed tile that compliments the landscaped frontage.
