Blackpool Wind Shelters
Designed by McChesney Architects with Atelier One, Blackpool’s Swivelling Wind Shelters are works of art that provide welcome respite from the elements.
In 2002 Blackpool Borough Council, in conjunction with The Art Department, launched a competition to design a swivelling wind shelter to be housed on the South Shore promenade in Blackpool. The competition offered architects the opportunity to design a shelter that would serve as an exciting landmark and contribute to a series of major permanent outdoor artworks.
The competition generated great interest with 81 anonymous designs received from around the world. After much deliberation McChesney Architects with Atelier One was selected as the winner. The first shelter was completed in spring 2006 with a second added a few months later.
