The Royal Institute of British Architects 175 Exhibition
RIBA Competitions celebrates 175 Years with 175 photographic images

Venue: The Architecture Centre, Narrow Quay, Bristol
Dates: 1 December to 24 December 2009

2009 marks the 175th anniversary of the founding of the Royal Institute of British Architects (RIBA). To celebrate this milestone and the remarkable buildings which have resulted from architectural competitions The Architecture Centre in Bristol is exhibiting 175 images of RIBA competition winning projects.

The RIBA organises and runs competitions to encourage excellence in design. It does so for a wide range of clients – both public and private – which have resulted in a variety of landmark projects and iconic structures. These range from major public projects such as London’s Millennium Bridge, The Sage Gateshead, Baltic and Wembley Stadium to the Urban Splash Tutti Frutti housing project and smaller structures, such as the De La Warr Pavilion at Bexhill on Sea and the Swivelling Wind Shelter in Blackpool.

The RIBA Competitions Office, established in Leeds over 25 years ago, holds a photographic archive of past projects from which images for the exhibition will be drawn.

Speaking about the exhibition, Louise Harrison, RIBA Competitions Manager, said “We have a fantastic archive of amazing images and have grasped this opportunity to share them. We have tried to capture the spirit of what competitions are all about and hope visitors enjoy our eclectic collection.”

Regional Director of RIBA South West Jon Watkins said ‘The RIBA South West region is excited to be hosting the 175 Exhibition at the Architecture Centre, Bristol as the Institute’s signs off its anniversary year. To have this stunning visual history of architectural work available to view is a unique event for the region and the city of Bristol. We are appreciative of the Construction Industry Council, Feilden Clegg Bradley Studios, Heath Avery Architects and Lacey Hickie Caley in supporting this exhibition in Bristol during the festive period.’

“The Architecture Centre has a long history of working closely with the RIBA in the region”, Director, Gillian Fearnyough said. “The RIBA 175 exhibition is a great opportunity to celebrate first-class design in the UK, and to recognise the success of the competition process. We are delighted to be presenting this important body of work to our audience in the city and beyond.”

London Bridge 800 Competition
Exhibition of all entries

Venue: CUBE Gallery, 113-115 Portland Street, Manchester
Dates: 5 November to 18 December 2009

An exhibition featuring the design entries to the recently concluded London Bridge Ideas competition is to take place at the CUBE Gallery in Manchester.

The competition was launched in May on behalf of the Worshipful Company of Chartered Architects (WCCA), a Livery Company of the City of London. The competition marked the 800th anniversary of the opening of the first London Bridge in 1209AD and invited today's designers to imagine a new version of the inhabited bridge.

The competition received an exceptional response with over 70 entries received from architects and students of architecture from all over the world. Submissions came from the UK, Europe and as far afield as the USA, Argentina, China, Hong Kong and South Africa.

The following schemes were awarded prizes :
1st Prize – Laurie Chetwood, Chetwoods, London;
2nd Prize – Lawrence Friesen, GenGeo, Ilona Hay, London
3rd Prize – Ryszard Rychlicki, student, Poznan, Poland.

Laurie Chetwood's winning design was described by the judges as 'beautifully presented, wildly imaginative and a unanimous first choice'.

David Cole-Adams, Clerk to the WCCA said "The Company of Chartered Architects have been delighted with the response to the Competition and the fact that a number of entrants had told them that it had been enormous fun taking part in a short, sharp, ideas competition. Perhaps, before Boris Johnson holds his competition for an inhabited bridge further downstream, he might wish to look at the entries and take inspiration from the quality of the ideas raised through this competition!"

Don't miss this opportunity to see the exciting and varied range of competition entries.

Whitworth Art Gallery Competition
Exhibition of Shortlisted Schemes

Venue: Whitworth Art Gallery, The University of Manchester, Oxford Road, Manchester, M15 6ER
Dates: 1 October - 31 October 2009

Five teams of architects are competing to create grand designs for what each hopes will be their winning version of a Whitworth Art Gallery for the future.  The finalist of this Royal Institute of British Architects (RIBA) architectural competition will work with the Whitworth on detailed plans for building developments to the gallery, following the first-round pass for Heritage Lottery Funding that was awarded in February.  The five shortlisted designs are now being placed on public display in the gallery throughout October, where visitors can see drawings and models that bring the architects' ideas to life.

During this time the gallery will be asking for visitors to give their views on the designs, and all feedback will be considered as part of the final judging of the compeition which takes place in early November.
