Judges' comment
The jury was particularly impressed by the fact that the design of the new building had been developed with a fundamental transformation of the college's organisation and management, and by the way pupils and staff had been included in the process of change.
Although it is too early to determine whether the 'cluster' arrangement of teaching spaces has been a success, it is evident that the architecture is robust enough to accommodate a degree of reorganisation should this be required.
This is a highly legible building. The key decision to locate accommodation off a central street with workshop spaces on one side and teaching space on the other has resulted in a highly practical and legible building. The simplicity of the plan lends itself to extension – Phase 2 is currently on site with no disruption to Phase 1.
