UCL Cancer Institute- RIBA London Award Winner 2009
Grimshaw’s award winning UCL building is at the heart of one the largest bio-medical facilities in Europe and houses over 350 scientists. Internally the design combines both research areas and laboratories, while on the outside its façade responds to a grade II listed setting. The requirements of materials employed in healthcare, in particular in surface areas; need to be resilient in order to respond to everyday medical requirements. How might today’s research into material compounds embed future intelligence into the everyday design treatment of our next generation of healthcare buildings?
Find out from the UCL Cancer Institute project architects about the process behind the material choices of this innovative healthcare facility and hear what designers and architects’ might be specifying in the next twenty years and beyond.
