The RIBA Schools Client Forum, in association with the DfES and Association of Science Education, held a one-day conference on the design of specialist spaces in secondary schools at the RIBA, 66 Portland Place, London.
How the external design affects the interior design and how the demands of teaching and learning (the inside design) can constrain the external design were explored.
Speakers included Beech Williamson DfES, Andy Piggott of the Association of Science Education and Sean McDougall of the Design Council. The afternoon programme included optional workshops on science lab design, the DfES Building Bulletin 93 and physical education and sport facilities.
