"The Learning City: For many centuries, universities have played a leading role in the intellectual, commercial, health-care and cultural lives of the cities in which they are based. In doing so, they have often contributed positively to the regeneration of many towns and cities. This relationship is increasingly important in the knowledge society of the 21st century and indeed Governments are placing greater emphasis on the economic impact of a university and it teaching, research and knowledge transfer. This conference therefore comes at an appropriate time and will look at various aspects of the physical inter-relationship between higher educational institutions and the cities in which they are based."
