Venue:
Gallery 1, RIBA, 66 Portland Place
Description:
This exhibition of black and white photographs of New York landmarks addresses the cultural, historical and architectural significance of each location, spotlighting the most significant and unusual of the 22,100 protected properties and structures in the city. A panorama of styles and building types is represented including religious, commercial and residential buildings ranging from small colonial farmhouses to mansions of the Gilded Age, and from iconic skyscrapers to lesser known jewels of New York's architectural heritage such as Jeffrey's Hook Lighthouse (1880), the Puck Building (1885–86), Sidewalk Clocks (1907), and Mother African Methodist Episcopal Zion Church (1923–25).
Curated by Barbaralee Diamonstein-Spielvogel and designed by Massimo Vignelli, the exhibition celebrates the 40th anniversary of the New York City Landmarks Law, which protects buildings and objects of unique character or special historical or aesthetic value. Organised by the Historic Landmarks Preservation Center in New York.
