St Martin-in-the-Fields model

St Martin-in-the-Fields model; London
James Gibbs (1682–1754)
Built 1720–26
Model; 1721; pine and mahogany; lent by St Martin-in-the-Fields Church
RIBA Library Drawings Collection

This original model shows various alternative decorative schemes for the exterior and interior. Gibbs combined a dramatic temple portico, which was then entirely new to English church architecture, with a spire. He published his design in 1728 and St Martin’s was imitated as far afield as Ireland, America and India.
