A timber-frame house

A timber-frame house, East Sussex or Kent
Built 1400–1450
Model; 1970–80; stained wood
RIBA Library Drawings Collection

In the parts of East Sussex and Kent that were heavily wooded, timber was the main building material. This model shows the framing of a typical timber-frame house, in which the structure is secured by braces and triangular roof trusses. The filling was usually plastered and painted over, though the frame remained visible.
