Sea and Ships Pavilion, Festival of Britain; London
Sir Basil Spence (1907–76) Built 1951 Model; 1951; wood, metal, card, plaster and paint
RIBA Library Drawings Collection

Temporary exhibition buildings are designed to awe and amuse visitors and are often experimental in design. This pavilion told the story of British shipping. Its design evoked a shipyard scaffold, with exhibits and floors hung from a structural frame. The artworks in the model are by the artists who made the real pieces.
