RIBA Stirling Prize winner 2004 - 30 St Mary Axe
This skyscraper is already a well-known landmark on the London skyline. Foster and Partners have created an office building that is both visually interesting and environmentally innovative.
The shape, which has been likened to a gherkin, comes from the desire for an aerodynamic form that maximises the amount of natural lighting. Windows onto the building’s atria also provide natural ventilation. The resulting office block uses fifty percent less energy than a conventional building.
