Are you looking to sit on a design review panel or develop your skills to Chair a panel? Do you want to gain an insight into how best to present your scheme at Design Review?

This half day training session is aimed at architects, planners, landscape architects and other built environment professionals. The training is based around the recently updated industry standard best practice guidance to delivering Design Review ‘Design Review, Principles and Practice’.

Outline Programme
The event will provide an insight into what a design review panel is looking for from the perspective of the reviewer. It introduces the principles of design review and techniques for those who wish to sit on a design review panel, either as a panel member or as the chair.
The event includes presentation skills and proven design review techniques. It demonstrates how to provide constructive criticism as a panel member and gives an overview of the role of panel chair. This includes bringing together the opinions of the panel, managing conflicts and making sure that the final report accurately reflects the panel discussions.
The event includes the ten principles of design review, covering the revised RIBA/RTPI/LI/CABE guidance and includes an understanding of the NPPF and the localism agenda.

Learning Outcomes

  • learn how design review works and how panels operate
  • learn how to be more constructive in your comments and deliver criticism and praise where needed
  • take part in a mock design review
  • learn how to assess a site and its context to help inform your comments

Presenters
The session will be run by Barry Shaw and Ben van Bruggen.

Ben and Barry are independent advisers on architecture, town planning and urban design.
Barry Shaw set up the Kent Architecture Centre in 1995 and was a key player in establishing CABE from the Royal Fine Art Commission. Barry was subsequently responsible for setting up the South East Regional Design Review Panel, in partnership with the RIBA, which followed the CABE model but adapted it for the needs of a large region. He has wide experience of design review in the UK and overseas.

Ben van Bruggen qualified as a town planner and urban designer and has over 20 years of planning and urban design experience in the public sector, government agencies and private practice. He joined CABE as Senior Design Review Advisor in 2001. Ben also helped the NHS and the Home Office to set up their internal design review panels. Ben remains active on the Home Office design review panel and has written Better Police Buildings, a review of the effectiveness of the Home Office design panel.
