Emerging Architecture: Studio Sanjeev Shankar + GRAFT

23 February 2010

6:30 PM - 8:00 PM

Venue:

RIBA 66 Portland Place, London W1B 1AD

Description:

Please note this lecture has now moved to the Jarvis Hall and more tickets are available.

Sanjeev Shankar from India presents his globally acclaimed project Jugaad, where 90 residents of an Indian urban village reincarnated 945 discarded oil cans into an incredible suspended shade pavilion. Shankar makes a case for merging traditional craft skills with contemporary and emerging cultural and technological tendencies through an open source, inclusive process and for creating community places by bringing democratic design to the fore.

USA and Germany based, GRAFT Architects presents its project for the Make It Right Initiative, rebuilding the Lower Ninth Ward of New Orleans damaged by hurricane Katrina. Instigated by MIR and its founders Brad Pitt, GRAFT, Bill McDonough and Cherokee, a group of high-profile and influential international architects were engaged to develop affordable house typologies for low income residents incorporating the latest in sustainable construction and design.
