Emerging Architecture: Habitats by Zigzag Arquitectura + Chinthaka Wickramage Associates

28 February 2012

6:30 PM - 8:00 PM

Venue:

RIBA, 66 Portland Place, London, W1B 1AD

Description:

Established in 2005, Zigzag Arquitectura has worked extensively in design and research. Recipients of numerous awards, they discuss their striking new social housing scheme in Mieres, northern Spain - a reworking of an urban archetype. In Mieres the generic courtyard block has been reassembled to create new and varied compositions through bold geometries while managing to remain humane in its scale.

Chinthaka Wickramage draws on the rich vernacular tradition of Sri Lanka while working to respond to modern-day requirements. Their new community centre in Thalalla built to a budget of £34,000 restores essential services to a community devastated by the 2004 tsunami.

Wickramage discusses the project and an approach to building that adopts the ancient Buddhist tradition of tam pita viharas (building on pillars), so that it can withstand flooding.

This talk accompanies: Emerging Architecture Exhibition 2011| (until 29 February).
