Celebrated for his highly atmospheric and charged spaces this year's Royal Gold Medallist, Peter Zumthor creates buildings that are an experience for all the senses.
Since 1979, Swiss-born Zumthor has overseen a small yet powerful and uncompromising practice. From projects such as the Kunsthaus Bregenz in Austria, the Therme Vals (thermal baths) in Vals, Switzerland and the Kolumba Art Museum in Cologne his buildings revel in a richness of materials and an attention to detail that is informed by their surroundings.
In this lecture, Zumthor uses past and present projects to illustrate an architecture that speaks its own language. 'Every building' he says, 'is built for a specific use in a specific place and for a specific society. My buildings try to answer the questions that emerge from these simple facts as precisely and critically as they can.'
Given in recognition of a lifetime's work, the Royal Gold Medal is approved personally by Her Majesty the Queen and is given to a person or group of people who have had a significant influence 'either directly or indirectly on the advancement of architecture'.
