The RIBA British Architectural Library operates an enquiry and research service available to members and the public.

Recent requests have included:
  • straw bale technology
  • design for residential nursing homes
  • anti-skateboard design
  • the history of London's Smithfield Market
  • how to find the UK Building Regulations on the web
  • how long must an architect keep project records and drawings
  • biographical information on an architect active in the 1930s
  • architect's fees

The RIBA Library's Information Centre helps with such questions daily and can also provide links to other resources. Questions requiring more detailed research, for example, on an architect's career, the design of a particular building type or the history of a particular building can be undertaken. Information can also be provided about building materials, specific products and techniques used in the past. A charge may be made for these services to non-members.

RIBA chartered members can also be referred to specialist practice consultants who can provide help and guidance on a range of practice issues from legal and contractual problems, debt recovery, taxation, building regulations, party wall matters or planning advice.
