Mumbai is a city of noise, traffic, street life and people. While this heady mix has been the source of much celebration, it has for many in the contemporary city become intolerable and the only way out of the swarm of humanity is upwards.
Andrew Harris (UCL) charts the rise of a new vertical urban form of elevated roads and walkways that now criss-cross the modern city raising not just people, but the spectre of a stratified Mumbai - a city in two layers, one for those on top and another for those below.
