New House, Brigsley
ARCHITECT: hodson architects
AWARDS WON: riba YORKSHIRE award 2016,
The house is a simple, well-ordered design that has delivered the Scandinavian quality requested by the client. The accommodation is split in two by a strong east-west axis which links a prominent tree on the western boundary through a double-height circulation space to a raised seat and pergola on the eastern edge of the site. The axis is accentuated by the glazing to each end of the hall, so that the black limestone path is visible through the house and garden.
The utility, cloakroom and study rooms are on the south side of the axis, while the open-plan kitchen, dining and living room are to the north, split by a free-standing painted brick divide that incorporates the wood-burning stove and shelving recesses. The plan is shifted so that the corner of the living room is opened up by glazing and large sliding doors to take advantage of the south east orientation and views over the garden and open fields beyond. A full-height storage wall occupies the northern wall and provides different sized recesses for storage and display - some of which are brightly painted to create pockets of colour enhancing the warmth and vibrancy of the living room.
The spaces for all areas are simple and well-proportioned especially in the living room. The entrance hall leads through to an open plan kitchen, living and dining area; the rest of the building is accessed via a central stairwell which has a slate floor and a timber and glass staircase. All is beautifully detailed with carefully considered ceilings of exposed white painted joists, exposed white brick walls, and well organised vistas.
The ground floor office, toilet and utility are well detailed rooms. On the first floor, the rooms are all open to the underside of the ridge and this lofty volume works well with plenty of natural daylight. Externally the building has an Eternit slate roof with steel rainwater goods, white render, and grey aluminium windows, all successfully designed. This is a beautifully conceived and executed piece of architecture.
