'Palladian Design: The Good, the Bad and the Unexpected' is open at the RIBA from 9 September 2015 to 9 January 2016. Entry to the exhibition is free and is supported by a season of talks, events and workshops.

Introducing Palladian Design 

Various dates throughout autumn and winter 2015, 6.30pm to 7pm
New series of Tuesday evening introductory talks taking place with Palladian Design curators Charles Hind and Vicky Wilson.

 

66 PORTLAND PLACE BUILDING TOURS 

Alternate Saturdays from 26 September to 19 December, 2.30pm to 3.30pm  
During our Palladian season, join us for a tour of our unique building full of beautiful Art Deco inspired details, interesting architectural history and hidden stories.

 

Picturing This! With the Big Draw

Tuesday 6 October, 7pm to 8.40pm
The RIBA and The Big Draw invites you to grab a pencil, pen, crayon or charcoal for a big architectural sketch up! 

 

ARCHITECTURE DRAWING DAY

Saturday 10 October, 11am to 4pm

EXPLORE & DRAW: RULES OF PROPORTIONS
11am to 4pm
This drawing workshop takes place at Chiswick House and explores the usefulness of compositional tools, maths and geometry in relation to architectural drawing.

Drawing London Through a Lens 

11am to 4pm 
Hosted by artist Liam O’Connor, explore how artists have used photographic devices to create drawings, create your own Camera Obscuras.

iPad drawing workshops

11am to 11.45am and 2pm to 2.45pm 
Learn how to draw digitally on a guided workshop through the Palladian exhibition with artist Wilson Yau. iPads will be provided.

 

Abstract Palladians

Discussion with Adam Caruso and Pier Vittorio Aureli exploring contemporary Palladianism. 

 

Explore & Draw: Palladian Principles 

Saturday 24 October, 11am to 4pm
Learn new skills in this drawing workshop, where you'll wander through central London and draw nearby Palladian buildings 

 

Late Tuesday – Good Taste/Bad Taste?

A special evening exploring architectural taste, with a special programme of talks, events, performance, film and music.

In Pursuit of the Ideal I, A Sense of Proportion

Saturday 7 November, 11am to 4pm
This photography workshop has been inspired by Palladio’s use of proportions derived from maths, music and geometry.  

 

Palladian Striptease

Tuesday 10 November, 7pm to 8.40pm
Debate guest hosted by TAG (The Traditional Architecture Group) distiling the essence of Palladian design.

 

Point & Shoot: In Pursuit of the Ideal II, The Whole and its Parts

Saturday 14 November, 11am to 4pm 

In this photography workshop you'll discover the use of classical elements, symbolism and form in architecture. 


The Children of Palladio

Tuesday 24 November, 7pm to 8.40pm
Discussion hosted by Olivia Horsfall Turner exploring the people behind Palladianism and its global adventure.

 

Myth Busting Palladianism

Tuesday 8 December, 7pm to 8.40pm
An evening debunking the myths and architectural assumptions of Palladianism with a discussion setting it within its wider historical context.

BUILDING BLOCKS: FOR 2 TO 5 YEAR OLDS

First Tuesdays of the month: 6 October3 November and 1 December 
Drop-in to our morning sessions for little architects (under 5s) and their carers. Listen to stories, sing songs, play games and create your own artworks.

 

DESIGN QUEST: FOR 6 TO 10 YEAR OLDS

Beautiful Symmetry
Monday 26 October, 11am to 4pm 
Discover, admire and bask in Palladio’s symmetrical architectural glory and make your own beautiful symmetrical designs.

Animated Buildings
Tuesday 27 October, 11am to 4pm 
Bring buildings to life and let them misbehave! Create a short animation, drawings and collages by ripping up the Palladian architecture rule book.

Games Design workshop
Wednesday 28 October, 11am to 4pm 
Hosted by BAFTA award winning games designer, Sophia George, get playful with Palladio’s designs and learn how to start making your own video game.

Buildings alive!
Thursday 29 October, 11am to 4pm 
Construct, renovate, demolish and reassemble your own Palladian building using stop-motion software. Add some special effects to create a short animation and bring these buildings to life!

Using iPads, a whole heap of crazy materials and a lot of creativity, create an animation exploring architecture.

Draw the line
Tuesday 27 October, 11am to 4pm 

Experimenting with different layers, materials and techniques use both traditional and digital drawing tools to create our own glorious Palladian-inspired drawings.

Abstract architectural mash up
Friday 30 October, 11am to 4pm 
Explore the exhibition and use your own drawings and photos to create digital collages that mash opposing styles together to create something new.

SKILL UP: FOR 15 TO 18 YEAR OLDS

Photographic Portrait of a Place
Wednesday 28 October, 11am to 4pm 
Consider how contemporary architecture references classical values by creating a photographic portrait of 66 Portland Place and its surroundings.

From Drawings to Digital
Thursday 29 October, 11am to 4pm 
Working to an architectural brief, create a building inspired by Palladian design principles. Develop drawing skills and then translate your building layout plans into a digital format.

Digital Portfolio
Friday 30 October, 11am to 4pm  
Using the Palladians exhibition as inspiration, you'll create your own designs and then learn how to translate it into an effective digital portfolio.
