New Alder Centre Building for Bereavement Counselling within the Alder Hey Health Park, Liverpool

RIBA Competitions is pleased to announce the launch of an invited design competition on behalf of Alder Hey Children’s NHS Foundation Trust.  The competition is seeking to select an architect-led design team for a new Alder Centre Building within the Alder Hey Health Park.  The Alder Centre is unique within the NHS and provides bereavement counselling for families who have lost a child as well as a national telephone helpline and general counselling for Trust staff.  This new circa 310m2 building will for the first time offer the opportunity to provide a dedicated facility to meet the needs of this highly specialised and sensitive service, in which purpose-designed external space will be as equally an important feature of the successful design.  The new Alder Centre will be a key addition to the Health Park Campus, whose design will need to reflect the quality of other recent developments on the site and the ‘Hospital in a Park’ landscape setting.

Expressions of Interest are sought from innovative, architect-led design teams across Europe.  An equal honorarium of £4,000 (+VAT) will be paid to each of the teams (up to five) short-listed to participate in the design concept phase of the competition.  Honorarium payments will be made to the architect firm leading each team and will be paid following submission and presentation of design concepts at a clarification interview.

On the Competition launch, David Houghton (Development Team Project Manager) said:  “This is a unique and exciting opportunity to create a bespoke building of small scale but huge vision, which demands a sensitive response to its function and setting. The challenge is to meet the building user’s aspiration that the new Alder Centre will be ‘A place like no other’ ”.

Expressions of Interest should be submitted in accordance with the requirements set out in the Preliminary Briefing Paper and Memorandum of Information available via:

Interested parties who intend to submit an Expression of Interest must obtain a Unique Registration Number (URN) by completing the form available from:

The closing date for receipt of Expressions of Interest is 14.00hrs (GMT) on Monday 13 March 2017.
