Architects asked to support next generation of architects at special summer fundraising party – extraordinary auction lots up for grabs!

RIBA President Angela Brady will be joined by guest of honour Sarah Wigglesworth on Thursday 28 June 2012, for the second annual fundraising event in aid of the RIBA Education Fund. The highlight of this fun social event will be a fundraising auction, with an extraordinary range of items, kindly donated by RIBA supporters, which will be auctioned off by a Sotheby’s auctioneer Adrian Biddell.

Items up for auction include a Paul Smith bespoke suit, with a personal fitting by Paul Smith, a trip on the Orient Express, and a cookery class at Divertimenti Cookery School, amongst many other special lots.

The RIBA is calling on its members to attend the President’s Fundraising Event and to help change the prospects for the next generation of architects who would otherwise be unable to undertake their studies.

The RIBA Education Fund is a registered charity that makes grants to students of architecture in the UK experiencing financial hardship. The Fund was set up to ensure the study of architecture remains financially accessible to all; it supports students throughout their education, not only encouraging diversity, but also ensuring access for those who would otherwise struggle with the costs.

Architecture courses are longer and usually more expensive than most other courses due partly to the need for materials for studio work, printing and study trips. Student loans do not cover this expenditure over the course duration. This, coupled with the ongoing economic instability, could result in a lost generation of talented future architects who choose not to enter the profession because of the financial burden.

RIBA President Angela Brady said:

'I passionately believe that anyone dreaming of becoming an architect should have the opportunity to do so.

'All the money raised at our event will go towards the RIBA Education Fund. It is essential that those already established in our profession take the opportunity to give something back and support the next generation of aspiring architects.'

The event, held at the RIBA, 66 Portland Place, London, W1 will feature a sushi bar, drinks reception, dinner, live music and auction. Individual tickets are priced at £150 each and tables of ten at £1500.
