Specialist insurer Hiscox has announced that it is to sponsor the annual Royal Institute of British Architects (RIBA) Manser Medal in 2014 and 2015.
The RIBA Manser Medal is awarded every year to the best new house designed by an architect in the UK. It was created in 2001 to celebrate excellence in housing design and was named to honour Michael Manser CBE, a designer of exceptional homes and former RIBA President. Previous winners include Carl Turner Architects for Slip House (2013), Acme for Hunsett Mill (2010) and Alison Brooks Architects for the Salt House (2007).
The two-year sponsorship reflects Hiscox’s expertise in home insurance, and complements its existing commitments to art and design in the communities in which it operates. This includes its sponsorship of The Serpentine Gallery and Whitechapel Art Gallery, and its involvement in initiatives such as Sculpture in the City.
As part of its involvement in the RIBA Manser Medal in 2014, Honorary President of Hiscox, Robert Hiscox, will join Michael Manser CBE and other industry figureheads on the judging panel.
Charlie Thomas, National Partnerships Manager at Hiscox UK said: “We have long admired the RIBA and their commitment to recognising well-designed homes. We enjoy insuring buildings where new techniques or materials are used, or that rely on new technologies. We are inspired by such buildings, and are also hugely respectful of the clients, architects and other professionals who create them. Through our involvement in the RIBA Manser Medal, we are able to highlight and celebrate just some of these architectural contributions and look forward to finding out who will win next autumn.”
Stephen Hodder, RIBA President, said: “I am delighted the RIBA is partnering with Hiscox on the RIBA Manser Medal. Well-designed houses greatly improve our quality of life. We invest enormous amounts of our money and energy in our homes and Hiscox helps people to safeguard those investments. With their support the RIBA Manser Medal will be able to inspire more exemplary house design in the years to come.”
The RIBA Manser Medal 2014 winner will be announced at the RIBA Stirling Prize dinner in October 2014.
