The Social is a London-wide platform set up to encourage architects and people in the creative industries to meet and exchange ideas in alternative settings. It aims to get designers from all backgrounds together to discuss the built environment and the architectural profession to benefit from a wider circle of contacts and networks. Activities include creative and sporting events, debates, talks and workshops. Past events include go-karting with Alsop vs. FAT, a bowling night, plus a cheese and wine evening at Tom Dixon's studio.
Events are co-ordinated via The Social Committee comprising Neşe Halil, RIBA London, Nick Lyons and Hamish & Lyons.

10 July 2014: Glithero with Phil Cuttance host a casting and mould-making workshop
As a special collaboration for The Social workshop series, the three designers draw on their extensive knowledge of casting and mould-making to present a workshop in their studio space. Participants will be introduced to a fast-paced, fun and intuitive way of creating structures using mould-making and a lo-fi rotation-casting technique. Each participant will be given a selection of materials from which to make a mould and a limited time frame in which to complete the task. The moulds will then be cast and each person will have a structure to take away with them. The exercise will explore a new and free way of prototyping and model-making, encourage fast-thinking and highlight the importance of thinking through making. For full details and booking.
8 May 2014: Behind-the-Scenes at Ed's Shed was a great first event to start The Social 2014 series. It was nice to see familiar faces and new ones enjoying an evening with architectural photographer owner Ed Reeve at his Hackney residence that Adjaye Associates designed.
Further details of the 2014 programme will be announced shortly - to be kept up to date on all the latest news and booking information please join our mailing list by emailing firstname.lastname@example.org or follow us @TheSocial_RIBA
The Social committee launched the 2013 programme with another fantastic life drawing series with tutors from London Drawing. There were three great classes on offer - at the Design Museum, Dellow Centre (including a tour from the architects Featherstone Young) and the Roca London Gallery.
In May we visited Clerkenwell Design Week for some craft beer tasting and toured the architect made installations, guided by a designer from Mobile Studio.
We basked in a summer evening's glow in August where, under the watch of London Petanque Club, we played boules at Cleaver Square in Kennington.
During September we gathered at designjunction for a 'Saddle up with The Social' - with demos from Brooks saddles and a cycling inspired photo competition.
And finally on a wet and cold November evening we gathered at the Moooi London showroom and cheered ourselves with a cocktail mixology masterclass.
