Research and Innovation at the RIBA

The RIBA helps to develop and apply the research-based knowledge of RIBA members, chartered practices and schools of architecture in order to promote links between practice and academia. This will position us as a trusted research facilitator for architecture and the related built environment professions.

Key Work

The key work areas within research and innovation are:

  • To support and promote architectural research through the RIBA President’s Awards for Research.

  • To raise awareness among practitioners of the benefits, both intellectual and economic, of research in practice.

  • To support and promote architectural research – and a range of strategic research projects – within the RIBA, the architectural profession and architectural academia, concentrating on a primary research theme.

Annual research themes

  • 2016 - Learning from Projects: Building on the 2015 theme, we are supporting research that investigates the results of construction projects to develop new insight for use by clients, architects, engineers or other members of the construction industry

  • 2015 - Design Quality and Performance: read our report on the 400 items submitted to our call for evidence

  • 2014 - Design for an Ageing Population: access over 450 items of research introduced by experts from practice and academia to help you design the places and spaces that will welcome and support older people.
