Research and Innovation

The RIBA helps to develop and apply the research-based knowledge of RIBA members, chartered practices and schools of architecture in order to promote links between practice and academia. This will position us as a trusted research facilitator for architecture and the related built environment professions.

Key Work

The key work areas within research and innovation are:

  • To assist the RIBA to convene the RIBA’s annual research symposium.

  • To appoint and oversee the work of the judging panel for the President’s Awards for Research.

  • To raise awareness among practitioners of the benefits, both intellectual and economic, of research in practice.

  • To support and promote architectural research – and a range of strategic research projects – within the RIBA, the architectural profession and architectural academia, concentrating on a primary research theme.

Annual research themes

  • 2014 - Design for an Ageing Population: access over 450 items of research introduced by experts from practice and academia to help you design the places and spaces that will welcome and support older people.

  • 2015 - Design Quality and Performance: read our initial report on the 350 items submitted to our call for evidence - the online knowledge collection will be further devleoped throughout 2015.
