Sixth Form Centre, City and Islington College

City & Islington College were looking for an innovative design for a new modern learning environment to integrate with the existing College building in Angel, London.

Invited Education and Health

Designed by van Heyningen & Haward, Sixth Form Centre, City and Islington College is a six-storey building that provides 8000m2 of specialist teaching facilities.

It has a dynamic street presence with its glazed elevation that reveals the life of the College.

The night-time identity of the building, which can be lit up like a shop window, has been carefully considered in order to generate interest in further education and to integrate the building into local community life. A number of sustainable principles have been applied through the building such as natural light and ventilation to help create a high quality teaching environment.

Since its completion, the building has made significant improvements to the College’s rates of intake, retention and achievement.
